If you’ve a glitter ball hanging from your living room ceiling and John Travolta’s coming round this Christmas you’ll probably be looking for disco cube for your iPod. Oh, here’s one

Christmas decorations these days are so boring. Everyone’s house looks the same – tree in the corner, wreath on the door and cards up on the mantelpiece. Why not buck the festive trend and go for something a bit different?

In yet another strange twist on the iPod dock genre, IXOS has integrated a set of flashing LEDs into this cube-shaped speaker. It’s compatible with all 3G to 5.5G iPods and will fire sound out through its illuminated sides. Low-end bass is dealt with by a 3W sub while a 3.5mm jack input also caters for non-Apple aficionados.

Perfect for Christmas night fever, night fever.

Rather like the Wizard of Oz, the Queen's speech, crackers and sprouts, the XMI608 Disco Cube from Ixos is cutting a niche for itself during the festive period. And this year it's back, equipped for the latest generation of players.

If you missed it first time around, you'll not be surprised to hear that it's a speaker for your iPod, complete with flashing lights in time to your tunes, not unlike the dancefloor from Saturday Night Fever. There are two side-firing speakers and a subwoofer on board, volume control and the option to turn off those flashing lights.

And there are cartridges to cope with all iPods, with the exception of the new nano - but one will be available free of charge before Christmas. It's available now from John Lewis and PC World, priced at £59.99.

You might have seen this little gizmo last Christmas, but it's back again this year at John Lewis and PC World with a price cut from £75 to £60.

Just pop your iPod into the Ixos XMI608 Disco Cube (sorry, we didn't choose the name!) and the multi-coloured LEDs flash in time to the music.

It will also charge your iPod while it's playing, and can synchronise your iPod with a Mac or PC using a standard iPod/USB lead.

The Disco Cube is compatible with the 3G to 6G iPod range, and has a 3.5mm jack input so other MP3 devices can be connected to it.

Sound is provided by two side-firing speakers delivering 2.5 watts each, plus a 3 watt subwoofer.

And if all those flashing lights get too much for you, you can switch them off.
